Play-off fixture 2

Saturday 25th March

Two stunning performances……..

Saturday 25th March started with very high hopes for the two First Teams.  Both of our teams were playing City of Edinburgh, the men at Fortress Queensferry, where once again we breached the walls to record a 3 sets to zero win.  Meanwhile the Fabulous Suettes were being fabulous at Coatbridge High School where they won 3 sets to 1 against their fierce rivals.

Thursday evening’s practice ended in a sour note for the City boys, when Captain and most experienced player Ali Galloway went over on his ankle.  He knew immediately it was a bad one and would keep him out of the Saturday match.  Step up Stewart Caldwell.  It had been a few seasons since Stewart played in the off-setter slot, but in this match, he was magnificent. He served tough, he made a number of huge blocks, and every time setter Marc McLaughlin invited him to hit – he scored!

For the girls they dropped the first set to a hard working Edinburgh side although the play was scrappy.  However the Suettes came roaring back to take the second set 25-21, then worked their socks off to take the third set 26-24.

At Queensferry High School the guys from the West were dominant, taking the second set 25-18 amidst a shell-shocked silence from the home crowd.  Marc McLaughlin was conducting a master class on running first tempo spikers, linking smoothly and effectively with William Miller and Fraser Strachan, while the passing unit stayed on top of their battle with the Edinburgh servers.  Going into the third set the visitor’s confidence was sky high.  When Eddie Gorecki ‘roofed’ Edinburgh Captain Niall Collin with a titanic block the game was almost over and the Glasgow Boys saw the final exchanges out to win 25-21, and seal the match.

Back at Coatbridge the girls continued to stamp their authority all over the proceedings and took what proved to be the final set 25-12!

Two outstanding performances.  For the men it means that the Scottish Championship can we won next Saturday in the trip North to Aberdeen to play Bon Accord.  For the Suettes it means their hopes of retaining their championship are still alive…..this was a super day for the Club.

The men’s second team had a super tough play-off match to play against NUVOC.  The Glasgow side took the first set, but then lost the next three.  The Su Boys are still top of their table, but have another very tough fixture next week against Lenzie.

Finally, the girls from Su II played the latest of their triangular fixtures and played very well in beating City of Edinburgh II, before losing 3-2 to Jets.  This was a great performance from our girls.
