In the penultimate weekend of the 2015/16 season several things were decided, and several things are still left hanging...........

First of all congratulations and very well done to the men of the City of Glasgow Ragazzi team, who clinched the Premier Division Title with a solid 3 sets to 1 victory against South Ayrshire.

The new play-off system introduced by the SVA meant that every match in the league programme counted, and the play-off matches with the top three sides would be extremely tough.  The City Boys had an excellent regular season, playing some outstanding volleyball week on week, and in the first play off match V South Ayrshire we settled our performance and won a comfortable victory.  But then there were delays in the schedule......for the Easter Break, for the Cup Semi Finals, for National Team development, and the rhythm of the season was broken.

Saturday 23rd April the play-offs resumed with the City Boys needing one win from three matches to secure the Club's first Championship in a number of years.  The first in the series of three match was against Cup Winners City of Edinburgh at 'Fortress Queensferry'.  A big ask for the boys from Glasgow!

Set 1 started and finished with the visitors from the West playing well and winning the rallies.  Set 2 was nip and tuck from start to finish with the home side just edging it 25 – 22.  the Glasgow side were disappointed in having lost the advantage and their play in the third set reflected that as the Edinburgh side dominated and won 25 – 17.  The pattern of the game was settled by this time with Niall Collin for Edinburgh being the dominant hitter.  The score was close, but the Su Boys were always chasing the points difference, and the home side won 3 – 1.

The next match where the championship could be won was the very next day – Sunday 24th April 2016.  The venue was Prestwick Academy, and in the prematch meeting there was just a hint of tension from the Glasgow players.  We talked of working hard, we talked of being confident in out ability, we didn't mention the prize!

The first set was tight, but the Ragazzi team edged it.  The second set was tight, but the Ragazzi team edged it, and with the SVA's new scoring system that guaranteed us one point, and with that point the championship!

The players jumped around a little, slapped each other on the back, and wore huge grins, but there was still a match to be completed.  Set three went to South who played their younger players to great effect.  Set four we were back in the groove, and clinched the set and the match 25 – 17.

Huge congratulations are due to the players who have had a terrific season, and are worthy winners of the Scottish Volleyball Premiership.

Meanwhile the Su II men finished their season in third place.  Spirited performances against Bon Accord and Dundee were worthy of note, but ultimately the top three sides finished the season in the correct order.

Still to be completed.......?  the Fabulous Suettes had a fabulous win against City of Edinburgh on Saturday 23rd – this sets up the match against Edinburgh Jets next Saturday at Coatbridge.  If our girls win that one, the whole season will come down to one 'winner-takes-all' titanic struggle on Sunday 1st April.  I know where I will be on that day – what about you?
